Historically used as a vital communication tool, the hand-crafted drum, made from carved wood and goat skin, is a powerful symbol of unity and celebration. Artist Muhammed Kabir Abdullahi told Anadolu that the tradition has been in his family for three generations. He learned the art by observing his older brother and eventually adopted the same passion. Abdullahi explained that the drum's playing style has evolved from a standing to a seated position, but its core meaning remains unchanged. He described its sound as the heartbeat of the Hausa people, noting it once served as the community's broadcasting system. He recalled that it was played to announce events like the selection of a new leader, summoning people to gather, and was effectively the radio of its time. He emphasized that the Duman Girke is a profound symbol of social solidarity and a link to the past. Abdullahi's artistry has taken the drum's rhythms worldwide, with performances across Nigeria, other African nations, and countries in Europe and North America.
