UNCAPTIONED: Two Dead as Record Rainfall Floods New York City Streets and Subways
Two Dead as Record Rainfall Floods New York City Streets and Subways. At least two people died in New York City on Thursday after torrential rain flooded streets, subways, and basements across multiple boroughs, police confirmed. A 39-year-old man was found dead in a flooded Brooklyn basement, while a 43-year-old man was discovered in a submerged boiler room in Washington Heights, according to WABC. The New York Police Department said both incidents are under investigation, as emergency teams continue to assess damage citywide. NYC Emergency Management reported that 1.8 inches of rain fell in Central Park, preliminarily breaking a record set in 1917. LaGuardia Airport also saw nearly 2 inches of rain, surpassing a 1955 record, while flash flood warnings were issued for Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Videos posted online showed vehicles submerged and water rushing into subway stations in Brooklyn, with streets in Queens also heavily flooded. More than 1,000 flights were canceled nationwide, mainly in the Northeast, as strong winds caused delays at both JFK and LaGuardia airports. The storm, unrelated to Hurricane Melissa, is part of an inland system moving through the Northeast, expected to bring drier but windy conditions by Halloween.
