Philippines: Death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi climbs to 204
As of 06:00 Saturday, the death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi that has hit the Philippines since Nov. 2 has climbed to 204, with 109 more missing, according to the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall in the Philippines on Tuesday, triggering massive flooding that submerged houses up to the roofs, swept away countless cars, and displaced thousands of villagers. According to the data released, nearly 30,000 houses were damaged across the Philippines, along with 157 public facilities, including hospitals and schools. Power supply was disrupted in 162 municipalities, and communications were affected in 86. Agricultural losses exceeded 40 million pesos (about 680,230 U.S. dollars). Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos declared a state of national calamity on Thursday. Liloan, a coastal city in the country's Cebu Province was badly hit by the Typhoon Kalmaegi, and is called "ghost city" among the locals. Due to the typhoon, once-teeming streets in Liloan City has been empty and covered with mud and waterlogging. The search and rescue work has still been underway in the city, but power supply has not yet been restored to the disaster area.
