3. VARIOUS OF PROTESTORS LISTENING TO ADDRESSES KOSICE, SLOVAKIA - NOV. 17, 2025: Around 20,000 people gathered in Kosice on Monday, Nov. 17, to protest the government of nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The demonstrations coincided with coordinated rallies held in both Slovakia and Czechia as the two countries marked the anniversary of the 1989 Velvet Revolution.

Protesters accused current leaders of straying from the democratic values that emerged after the fall of the Moscow-aligned communist regime.

The commemorations stem from events on Nov. 17, 1989, when a student march in central Prague was violently dispersed by communist security forces — an incident that ignited the movement that ultimately ended four decades of authoritarian rule.

The Velvet Revolution paved the way for Czechoslovakia’s transition to democracy, culminating in the peaceful separation into Czechia and Slovakia in 1993.
