A one-year-old retriever named Kai has gone viral after a sweet and funny moment during her first hunting season. The clip, posted to Instagram by @duckt8r, has now reached 174,000 views.

The video, filmed by Gregg at Casey’s Pond in the McNary Wildlife Area, shows Kai proudly bringing a duck back to the boat. But as she tries to drop it in, the bird slips back into the water and begins swimming away.

Kai spins around in confusion, looking in the wrong direction before finally spotting the duck behind her. With determination, she makes the retrieve again—this time successfully—earning cheers from her owner and nephew Cole, 24.

This video shows my one-year-old retriever, Kai, bringing a duck back to my boat during a waterfowl hunt. As she tries to drop the duck into the boat, it slips out and falls back into the water. The duck starts to swim away, and Kai spins around looking in the wrong direction, clearly confused. After a few seconds of frantic searching, she finally spots it behind her, makes the retrieve, and proudly brings it back again. It’s a very sweet and funny moment from her first hunting season.

Where did it happen?
The video was filmed in Burbank, Washington, at a small pond known locally as Casey’s Pond, part of the McNary Wildlife area.

When did it happen?
It happened on Saturday, 11/8/25

Who filmed it, and on what device?
I filmed the video myself using a GoPro Hero 13 mounted in the boat.

Why did it happen?
This was part of Kai’s early training and real-world learning during her first waterfowl season. She’s still figuring things out, so moments like this, dropping the bird, losing it, then triumphantly finding it, are part of her natural development and make for great, authentic retriever footage.
