A fire erupted in a residential area in southern Japan, tearing through more than 170 buildings and leaving at least one person dead.

The blaze broke out in Saganoseki, Oita City, on Kyushu Island on Tuesday evening, November 18.

Authorities said dozens of homes were destroyed, prompting 175 residents to evacuate at around 5:40 pm.

Footage shows smoke billowing from the burning neighbourhood, with an eerie red-orange glow illuminating the scene as blaring lights mark the presence of emergency responders.

Officials reported that the flames spread quickly due to strong winds and the high concentration of wooden structures in the community.

The flames also reached nearby forested areas, complicating efforts to contain them.

Authorities requested assistance from the Japan Self-Defence Forces, asking for a firefighting helicopter to provide aerial support and help slow the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
