UNCAPTIONED: Serbian President Faces Legal Complaint Over Alleged 'Sniper Tourism' in Sarajevo
Serbian President Faces Legal Complaint Over Alleged ‘Sniper Tourism’ in Sarajevo. A Croatian investigative journalist files a complaint in Milan accusing Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić of involvement in the so-called “Sarajevo safari” during the 1990s siege. Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into foreigners—allegedly including Italians—who paid to shoot civilians from sniper positions around Sarajevo. The scheme reportedly involved “sniper tourists” transported by Bosnian Serb forces loyal to Radovan Karadžić, later convicted of genocide. More than 10,000 people were killed in Sarajevo between 1992 and 1996, where snipers became one of the most terrifying features of daily life. The inquiry stems from evidence collected by writer Ezio Gavazzeni and a report submitted by former Sarajevo mayor Benjamina Karić. New claims surfaced after journalist Domagoj Margetić alleged on social media that a young Vučić was present at one of the sniper posts. Gavazzeni says the long investigation suggests “many” foreigners—Italians, Germans, French, English and others—were involved purely for thrill-seeking motives. Investigators say the findings could lead to serious legal action as they attempt to identify those who paid to take part in this “macabre tourist safari.”
