The Guatemalan prosecutor's office asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday to remove the immunity of President Bernardo Arevalo de Leon, in what represents a new chapter in the clashes between the government and the opposition in the country. The request arose from a complaint by the dissident faction for alleged "illegal" payments to construction companies, for which the president is accused of abuse of authority, usurpation of powers and resolutions that violate the Constitution.
