US, Los Angeles: Burbank Memorial Grows After Burbank Police K-9 Killed In Line Of Duty
Los Angeles, United States - November 24, 2025 11/23/2025 09:00 pm GMT-0800 BURBANK, Calif. – A memorial grew outside the Burbank Police Department on Sunday following the line-of-duty death of K-9 Officer Spike. Flowers, toys and other items were placed near the entrance, including a floral arrangement from the LAPD K-9 Unit, whose handlers stopped by to pay their respects. Burbank Police K-9 Officer Spike was shot and killed Saturday evening during an incident that led to a lengthy police standoff with the suspected shooter, who was later shot and killed by law enforcement. Spike was taken to the Burbank Animal Shelter for emergency treatment, but did not survive. The situation began around 6:40 p.m. Saturday when officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street near the northbound I-5 on-ramp. Police said a passenger fled from the vehicle, ran up the on-ramp, and was believed to be armed. Officers remained with the driver while additional resources, including a police helicopter and a K-9 team, responded to search for the suspect. During the search, Spike located the suspect, who police say fired multiple rounds, fatally striking the K-9 before fleeing on foot. The shooting triggered an hours-long search and standoff that moved through the wash area between the freeway sound wall and the I-5, eventually stopping near Tulare and Naomi Street. Police said the suspect was seen armed with a handgun. Officers used fire hoses to flood the wash in an attempt to force him out of hiding. The incident escalated into a joint operation involving Burbank and Glendale police, additional K-9 units, crisis negotiators and the Burbank SWAT team. According to Burbank PD, officers attempted to communicate with the suspect and urged him to surrender. The area was contained and less-lethal systems were deployed. Police said the suspect later opened fire at officers. Officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect at the scene. A handgun was recovered. No human officers or community members were injured. The suspect has not yet been identified.
