UNCAPTIONED: Europe Shapes a Possible Peace: France and Britain Prepare a Support Force for Ukraine
Europe Shapes a Possible Peace: France and Britain Prepare a Support Force for Ukraine. As the prospect of a Ukraine–Russia peace deal grows, European leaders are moving quickly to define how they would help secure any agreement - According to Politico. On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a new joint task force led by France and the U.K., with backing from the U.S. and Turkey. Its goal: to finalize what security guarantees Europe can offer Kyiv if a deal is reached. The announcement followed a virtual meeting of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” a group of 33 nations coordinating military support for Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said a multinational force would be essential to protecting Ukraine under a peace framework, and confirmed the U.K. is still prepared to put troops on the ground—though far from the front lines. France has floated stationing forces in cities like Kyiv or Odesa, while providing air support from neighboring countries. But analysts warn the plan hinges on solid U.S. commitment; without it, they say, deploying troops could be dangerously uncertain. Some countries—Germany among them—are more cautious, and Russia has already dismissed Europe’s approach. Still, supporters argue the coalition’s political unity could be key to making any peace deal credible.
