Kilauea volcano was rocked by an earthquake during its ongoing eruption in Hawaii.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a magnitude 4.6 tremor struck the volcano just before midnight local time on Wednesday.

USGS officials said the quake was centred on the volcano's southern flank, and little to no damage was expected.

The tremor occurred just minutes after Kilauea's 37th eruptive episode ended, following more than nine hours of continuous lava fountaining.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
