The pair bike daily, sharing wide-ranging conversations, but this time, Astrid had a determined plan to repeat yesterday’s chocolate purchase. Tom managed to steer the chat away with a few clever questions, avoiding any upset.

On a bike home from school, my daughter Astrid (3 years old here) asked if we can go to the supermarket. She had a plan to get me to buy M&Ms (which we did the day before). We bike to and from school everyday here in Shanghai, and our conversations are pretty wide ranging.
