João Pessoa, Brazil - December 01, 2025 The future of Leona, the 18-year-old lioness involved in the death of a young man at the Arruda Câmara Zoological-Botanical Park (Bica) in Brazil, began to be determined in recent hours. After the initial shock and public outcry, the park administration reported that the feline remains stable and under constant observation. The facility remains closed while a comprehensive security assessment is carried out, but the immediate priority is the animal's well-being. Leona was born in 2007 at the same park where she lives and is considered a beloved exotic animal by her keepers. After the attack, the technical team activated a physical and emotional monitoring protocol to determine her condition. According to park officials, the lioness exhibited a high level of stress, which is to be expected after such a traumatic event, but she responded well to initial checkups. Marília, the biologist responsible for her care, explained that in the hours following the incident, the lioness showed signs of recovery. “The lioness is still a little stressed, which is natural, but she’s doing well: she ate, relieved herself, and remains calm in her enclosure,” she noted. Although the zoo considers that “what happened was an absolutely unforeseen incident, outside of any scenario within the park’s routine,” alongside monitoring the animal, the Paraíba Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine (CRMV-PB) announced the creation of a technical commission to evaluate safety conditions. The inspection will include internal protocols, infrastructure, prevention measures, and wildlife management. At the moment, there is no scheduled date for reopening to the public.
