The blue jet on the flight

Buy video

This footage was recorded from a commercial flight departing from Xi’an to Singapore
, in the early morning of September 3rd, 2024.
At around 02:42 AM, while the aircraft was climbing after take-off, I noticed a sudden bright electric discharge rising upward from the top of a thundercloud.

The flash lasted less than one second, but the color was clearly deep blue, and the discharge extended vertically from the cloud top toward the upper atmosphere — which strongly resembles a Blue Jet, an extremely rare type of transient luminous event (TLE). It appears in the 10th second of the video.

The recording was captured accidentally using my phone through the cabin window. No filters, editing, or color adjustments were applied. The timestamp and GPS tag were automatically generated by the device, though GPS accuracy may vary since the plane had no signal at the time.

Based on the timestamp and flight path, the location was likely near Nanchong, Sichuan Province, while the aircraft was still climbing to cruise altitude.

I am the original recorder and copyright holder of this footage.
This was a spontaneous capture during the flight, and I can confirm it is authentic and unaltered.
