Thai army destroy crane used for radio jamming equipment in Cambodia
This is the dramatic moment the Thai military destroyed a Cambodian tower crane they claim was being used to transmit radio jamming equipment.
The Second Army Area said on December 10 that they successfully hit the structure on the access route to Preah Vihear in Cambodia after discovering it was being used to install jamming devices or anti-drone equipment. The crane also had CCTV camera systems with radar signals.
Investigators said they found a GPS spoofing system that disrupted satellite-based navigation, which affected drones operating in Thai territory, while the cameras were also being used to record footage and monitor Thai military operations.
The Preah Vihear temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but images have emerged of Cambodian troops using it as a military base in violation of international laws.
Fighting that erupted in July this year flared up on Sunday as the Thai army claimed Cambodian troops fired on a Thai engineering team building an access road in a disputed border area.
Officials said at least 15 people, including Thai soldiers and Cambodian civilians, have been killed in the ensuing clashes, while dozens more have been injured and more than 500,000 people have been displaced.
Cambodia's assault has largely been wayward, unguided rockets fired indiscriminately into Thai territory, while Thailand has used precision drone strikes and fighter jet strikes on military sites.
The BBC has reported that Thailand has provided 'compelling evidence' that Cambodia has also 'laid new landmines in bad faith' that have continued to injure Thai soldiers along the border, contributing to the collapse of a ceasefire brokered by Donald Trump for his Nobel Peace Prize bid.
Former Khmer Rouge henchman and Cambodian dictator Hun Sen - who was a leading figure in the genocide of his own people in the 1970s before assuming power in 1985 and overseeing the murder of thousands of opposition figures and critics - has repeatedly claimed that he wants peace and that Thailand is the aggressor.
Thai officials claim the ongoing border confrontations are a threat to national security and the areas must be secured.
