THESSALONIKI, GREECE - DEC. 12: Farmers protesting agricultural policies in Greece blocked access to the Port of Thessaloniki with tractor and vehicle convoys on Friday, Dec. 12, as part of nationwide demonstrations affecting the farming sector.
According to Greek media reports, farmers traveling from various locations in northern Greece, Thessaly, and Western Macedonia reached the city center in the morning hours before heading to the port’s main gate.
The farmers shut the port’s main entrance, halting traffic for about three hours. Several civil society organizations and citizens also gathered at the port entrance to show support for the farmers.
Farmer representatives said the aim of the protest was to make their voices heard and that they did not intend to disrupt port operations for an extended period. Civil society groups also issued statements backing the farmers’ demands.
A large meeting involving representatives of farmer blockades from across the country is scheduled to take place on Friday in the Nikaia district of Larisa, where demands will be discussed.
Earlier, on Dec. 10, farmers blocked the main entrances of the Port of Volos with tractors, suspending traffic, while local fishermen supported the protest by positioning their boats offshore.
Heavy police security measures were in place, and the port remained closed for about five hours before reopening after the farmers left the area.
Protests ongoing across Greece since the beginning of the month have at times led to the closure of intercity highways, airports, and border crossings.
Farmers are demanding the payment of delayed support funds linked to alleged corruption in state subsidies and measures to reduce high production costs.
