This is the dramatic moment Spanish farmers used a convoy of tractors to block a port in protest against an EU trade deal.

Angry farm workers gathered at the Port of Tarragona on January 8, blocking access along the A-27 as part of a demonstration against the EU–Mercosur free trade agreement.

Footage shows a long line of tractors positioned across lanes at the port's entrance and exit points.

The Tarragona blockade formed part of a wider wave of farmer rallies across Europe, including demonstrations in France, Portugal, and Greece.

Farmers argue the Mercosur deal would open the EU market to cheaper South American imports, such as beef and soy, undercutting local producers on environmental standards, hormone use, and production costs.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron said the country would vote against the agreement following similar protests.

The EU's trade deal with Mercosur, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, was finalised in late 2024 but has yet to be ratified.

EU officials say it aims to open new markets for European exporters facing fresh trade barriers from the United States and growing competition from China.
