5. PROTESTERS HOLDING BANNERS DAMASCUS, SYRIA - DEC. 12: Civilians gathered in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Friday, Dec. 12, to protest against the PKK/YPG terror group, which operates in the country under the name SDF.
Demonstrators assembled in Marjeh Square, voicing grievances over the group's occupation of the Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, and Raqqa provinces. Protesters condemned the organization's forced conscription policies and its excavation of tunnels beneath civilian settlements.
Participants called for an end to support for the PKK/YPG and urged the government to launch a military operation to clear the occupied territories. They held banners rejecting any unification with the group and asserting that the region could only be liberated through decisive action.
Fatin Ramazan, a human rights official from the Jazira region, told Anadolu that Kurds, Arabs, and Assyrians had united to declare that the SDF does not represent them. Ramazan emphasized that the local population firmly rejects any new agreements with the organization.
She accused the group of detaining women and children and banning celebrations for the anniversary of the revolution, describing their democratic rhetoric as false. Ramazan noted that the community rejects unification with the group due to its direct links to the PKK leadership in Qandil.
Ismail Salim, spokesman for the Raqqa National Delegation and member of the Council of Syrian Tribes, warned that the timeline for the "March 10 agreement" is set to expire in 18 days. He stated that the SDF had violated the terms of the deal, necessitating a different course of action.
Salim stressed that the tribes categorically reject the presence of what he termed a cross-border terrorist militia, accusing the group of maintaining ties with foreign intelligence services. He asserted that the SDF represents neither the diverse social fabric of the Jazira region nor patriotic Kurds.
