Volunteers clean waste accumulated at Ruzin Dam in Slovakia
MARGECANY, SLOVAKIA - DEC. 16, 2025: A group of volunteers carried out waste cleanup efforts at the Ruzin Dam located in Margecany --known for its picturesque setting -- in eastern Slovakia on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
The waste was carried by the Hornad and Hnilec rivers following heavy rainfall.
Participants said the amount of plastic bottles and other plastic waste was significantly lower than in previous years, adding that the collected debris consisted mainly of natural materials.
The cleanup effort was financially supported by the Kosice Self-Governing Region, which also funded repairs to floating barrier systems used for trapping waste at the dam.
