US Announces $11bn Weapons Sale To Taiwan. The Trump administration says the deal, worth around $11 billion, includes advanced rocket launchers, self-propelled howitzers and a range of missile systems. It will still need approval from the US Congress. This is the second arms sale to Taiwan since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. Taiwan’s defence ministry welcomed the announcement, saying it would help the island rapidly strengthen its deterrence capabilities as pressure from China continues to grow. China considers self-governed Taiwan a breakaway province and has increased military drills and incursions around the island in recent years. While the US formally recognises Beijing, it remains Taiwan’s strongest ally and largest arms supplier. The latest package includes around $4bn worth of HIMARS rocket systems and another $4bn in self-propelled artillery, according to US officials. If approved, it would eclipse all arms sales made to Taiwan under the previous US administration.
