Trump Administration Launched Probe Into Brown University After Campus Shooting. The Trump administration opened a federal investigation into Brown University over its handling of a deadly shooting that killed two students. The Education Department said it was examining whether Brown violated the Clery Act, which requires universities to disclose campus crime information and issue timely alerts. The probe followed a Dec. 13 mass shooting in which two people were killed and nine wounded. The suspected gunman, former student Claudio Neves Valente, was later found dead. Officials alleged Brown’s security and surveillance systems may not have met appropriate standards, allowing the suspect to flee and delaying emergency notifications. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said universities receiving federal funding must rigorously protect students and comply with campus safety laws. President Donald Trump had previously blamed the university for failures in the response, calling the case a “school problem.” Brown President Christina Paxson said the university had strengthened security measures and acknowledged widespread concern over campus safety. The Education Department demanded Brown submit five years of campus safety records by Jan. 30, warning that violations could threaten federal student aid eligibility.
