US: Waymo Self-Driving Taxi Left Immobilized As Power Outage Darkens San Francisco
San Francisco, United States - December 20, 2025 A video shared by X user jili sembrano captures a rainy nighttime scene during a power outage on December 20, 2025. Filmed from a sheltered viewpoint, possibly from a building entrance, the footage shows a wide intersection slick with rain. The pavement glistens as yellow and white light from streetlights and vehicle headlights reflects across puddles and wet asphalt. In the middle of the intersection, a white Jaguar I-PACE Waymo self-driving taxi remains motionless. Its brake lights are illuminated while traffic signals are completely dark due to the power outage, leaving the autonomous vehicle unable to proceed. Nearby buildings appear dim or unlit, adding to a moody and hazy atmosphere as rain continues to fall. Cars occasionally approach slowly from side streets, their headlights briefly lighting up the stranded Waymo. No aggressive traffic or honking is visible. The camera stays fixed on the scene, underscoring how the loss of power and non-functioning signals leaves the self-driving car stuck in place. The caption on the post reads: “Waymo is stuck!” The incident occurred on Mission Street near 1st Street, outside Golden Gate University, during a widespread San Francisco power outage. Waymo vehicles are designed to behave conservatively in such conditions, often remaining stationary until conditions are clear or remote assistance is available rather than risking unsafe movement.
