The annual Smithfield Market Christmas Eve Meat Auction takes place along the market’s Grand Avenue in the City of London, where crowds gather for the chance to buy turkeys, ducks, chickens, and joints of pork, beef, and lamb at bargain prices.

This long-standing London tradition, dating back over a century, is held every year on December 24th.

During the auction, traders sell off surplus meat to the public before closing for Christmas.

Prospective buyers wave banknotes in an effort to catch the attention of staff from G. Lawrence Wholesale Meats, who are among the traders taking part.
