Thousands of anime and manga fans attended Comiket in Japan as the event marked its 50th anniversary.

Footage shows crowds of fans, many wearing black shirts, at the opening of Comic Market in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Tuesday.

Visitors queued for hours outside Tokyo Big Sight before the doors opened at 10:30 am.

Organisers said more than 12,000 groups exhibited self-published works, including comics inspired by popular anime characters and original creations.

Comic Market, or Comiket, is a twice-yearly event where manga and anime enthusiasts come together to buy, sell, and celebrate Japanese pop culture.

The event will run through Wednesday.
