5. VARIOUS OF TRACTORS DRIVING RHONE, FRANCE - JAN. 5: Farmers in France’s Rhone region and neighboring departments announced plans to stage a large-scale road blockade south of Lyon, local authorities and media reported on Monday, Jan. 5.
Officials said major traffic disruptions are expected on key routes in the area on Monday.
The farmers said the protest targets government policies, including the management of lumpy skin disease outbreaks, rising production costs, and free trade negotiations such as the Mercosur agreement.
The EU-Mercosur trade agreement would grant preferential tariffs for imports of beef, poultry, dairy products, sugar and ethanol from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, while European industrial goods would gain wider access to South American markets.
The deal, initially expected to be signed in December 2025, has been postponed to January 2026.
Since mid-December, farmers from several European countries, including France and Italy, have warned that Mercosur tariff preferences could harm European agriculture.
