Russia: Heavy snow hits Moscow

Snow-covered platform, tracks at railway station Storyline Heavy snow has blanketed Moscow since Thursday night, disrupting air, road and rail travel in the Russian capital. As the accumulated snow is up to 50 or even 65 centimeters deep in some areas and seriously affected traffic on ring roads and overpasses, the municipal government on Friday advised residents to take the subway. And more than 450 flights have been delayed or canceled. The city's rail transport operator has stepped up snow removal to ensure safe and smooth running of trains. Meanwhile, around 130,000 people and 15,000 machines have been deployed and are working day and night to remove snow from sidewalks, bus stops, railway platforms and other public facilities, according to Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov.
