Storyline China's new quality productive forces gather steam to turbocharge future growth China has released a document outlining its priorities for the 15th Five-Year Plan emphasizing greater self-reliance in science and technology. The country's had a steady growth of sci-tech breakthroughs with cutting-edge technologies moving from labs to production lines. One industry where this is evident is in the country's artificial intelligence sector with companies like DeepSeek rocketing to global prominence. Now regularly used in firms across the country, DeepSeek has taken its large-scale models from obscurity to adoption in a very short period of time. Other industries, like quantum computing, have seen similar growth. Chinese scientists demonstrated for the first time continuous-variable quantum multipartite entanglement and cluster states on a single chip. The breakthrough lays the foundation for building scalable quantum computers and quantum networks. And one of China's most well-known industries for technological advancement is its new energy vehicles sector. Automakers like the Guangzhou Automobile Group have just completed the country's first large-capacity all-solid-state battery production line. Solid state batteries are primed to tackle range anxiety by boosting a vehicle's battery range from 500 kilometers to about 1000. Qu Wan, researcher, Innovation-Driven Development Center, National Development and Reform Commission: "It can be said that 2025 is a crucial year for cultivating and developing new quality productive forces. Major achievements have shifted from breakthroughs at individual points to system-wide breakthroughs, marking an accelerated leap for the country from catching up to keeping pace and leading in cutting-edge science and technology. Innovation is rapidly transforming into an economic driving force, injecting strong momentum into the development of new quality productive forces." The document highlighting China's need for science and tech independence also emphasized the country's need for the development of new quality productive forces. First introduced in 2023, the term "new quality productive forces" describes advanced productivity models driven by innovative technology and high efficiency rather than traditional growth factors.
