Bomb disposal team finds 160 rockets in fields along Thai-Cambodian border
Bomb disposal teams have collected more than 160 rockets scattered across farmland near Thailand's border with Cambodia.
Explosives experts recovered the ordnance from fields in Buriram province on January 8, amid fears the unexploded artillery shells would explode while villagers are working.
Authorities said explosive ordnance disposal units have so far located at least 160 rocket shells lying in rubber plantations, cassava plots and sugarcane fields, with five of them still active.
The unexploded rockets were being prepared for controlled detonation
Village security guard Somwian Suksit said: 'Residents are now actively surveying their fields, especially rubber plantations, which are the areas with the most rocket impacts.'
Police Senior Sergeant Major Withit Selarak, a bomb disposal officer, said officers have inspected two sub-districts within range of Cambodian artillery.
He said: 'Initially, 158 rockets have been found, with five of them unexploded. It is still unknown how many more remain, as some have not yet been found or reported by villagers.'
Villagers have been urged to refrain from touching any objects resembling explosives and report them immediately to the authorities.
Thailand and Cambodia declared a ceasefire on December 27, ending weeks of conflict that left at least 26 Thai soldiers dead and one Thai civilian injured.
In Cambodia, the number of military fatalities is believed to be much higher, though regime chiefs have not revealed the actual figure.
The truce has been put in jeopardy following alleged Cambodian mortar fire that injured a Thai soldier in Ubon Ratchathani province on January 6.
Cambodia has allegedly dismissed the cross-border fire as an 'accident', claiming two of its soldiers were also injured in a 'rubbish heap explosion' in Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, opposite Ubon Ratchathani.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded an explanation for the alleged peace breach, adding Thailand is prepared to retaliate if necessary.
