UNCAPTIONED: Michael Carrick set for interim return to Manchester United until season's end
Michael Carrick set for interim return to Manchester United until season’s end. Manchester United agreed a deal in principle with Michael Carrick to take charge as interim manager until the end of the season, a club source said. Carrick replaces Ruben Amorim, who was sacked earlier this month, and will make his return to the dugout with a high-pressure derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford. The 44-year-old inherits a struggling side sitting seventh in the Premier League, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal, and already out of both domestic cup competitions. United’s FA Cup exit to Brighton has left the club facing its shortest season since 1914-15, with only 40 matches to play across all competitions. Carrick previously served as caretaker manager in 2021 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal and was again among the leading candidates for the interim role. After Amorim’s departure, Darren Fletcher briefly took temporary charge but failed to secure a win in two matches, prompting United to move quickly for Carrick. As a player, Carrick made 464 appearances for United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League, giving him strong pedigree at the club. His managerial record includes a spell at Middlesbrough, where he guided the team to the Championship play-offs in his first season before being dismissed last year.
