Vienna, Austria - January 14, 2026 On January 14, 2026, the traditional Christmas fir tree from Schönbrunn Palace found a new home at the zoo, delighting the African elephants with a natural activity and treat. The 160-year-old Salzburg spruce, grown in Austria’s Rauris Valley, had served as the centerpiece of the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market from November 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Decorated with around 2,000 environmentally friendly LED lights and countless baubles, it was one of the most photographed attractions in the Courtyard of Honor. Rather than being discarded, the 18-meter-high tree was professionally felled by forestry experts from the Austrian Federal Forests and transported to the elephant enclosure early in the morning. The arrival quickly became a highlight for the youngest elephant calves born last year, who curiously examined, pushed, and played with the tree. Peeling the bark also provides a long-lasting physical and mental challenge for the herd. Andreas Gruber, CEO of the Austrian Federal Forests, said: “It’s wonderful that our Christmas spruce has brought joy to so many people. The fact that it is now finding such a sustainable and meaningful use in the zoo perfectly completes the natural cycle.” Katrin Edtmeier, Managing Director of the Christmas Market, added: “It is important to us that the Christmas market does not end with the last day it is open. It is a beautiful symbol of how tradition, sustainability and responsibility come together in a special way, as our Christmas tree now brings joy to the elephants.” Zoo Director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck explained: “We place great importance on providing our elephants with species-appropriate care… The Christmas tree is a special highlight every year for our herd, which now numbers six, and represents a welcome surprise for them.” The tradition of repurposing the palace tree highlights both sustainability and the close partnership between Schönbrunn Palace and the zoo, ensuring the elephant herd enjoys their “Christmas gift” for weeks to come.
