This is the shocking moment water gushes from the ceiling of a metro station in Japan.

Footage shows water pouring from the overhead structure of an underground passage inside Kasumigaseki Station in Tokyo on Wednesday at around 6 pm local time.

Reports said heavy, localised rainstorms had overwhelmed drainage systems, causing water to rise through manholes and subway passages.

Station authorities said a burst water supply pipe caused the leak. A passenger alerted staff after noticing water flowing out, leading to the closure of one nearby station entrance at around 6:30 pm.

By 8:30 pm, the entrance remained closed, although officials said the water pressure had begun to ease.

No passengers were injured, and train services continued to operate normally.
