Aleppo, Syria - January 17, 2026 In the town of Amuda, supporters of the Kurdish-led SDF (QSD) expressed dissatisfaction over President Ahmed al-Sharaa's decree affirming the rights of Kurdish Syrians. The decree formally recognises the Kurdish language and restores Syrian citizenship to all Kurdish Syrians, a move presented by Damascus as a step toward inclusion and reconciliation. The announcement followed fierce clashes in the northern city of Aleppo that left at least 23 people dead, according to Syria’s health ministry, and forced more than 150,000 people to flee from two Kurdish-run areas of the city.
