BMW Confirms The 4 Series Future With Gas Power Intact. The BMW 4 Series is staying, even as rivals scale back or abandon two-door models altogether. The carmaker confirms work is already underway on a next-generation 4 Series, designed to sit alongside the upcoming Neue Klasse 3 Series as a sportier, more design-led option. Good news for purists: petrol power is still very much in the picture. While a fully electric M4 was once considered, BMW now signals that combustion engines are likely to remain part of the lineup. The 4 Series, launched as a standalone model in 2013 and renewed in 2020, has proven successful and even spawned the electric i4. Its future, however, was questioned as BMW moves toward electric-first platforms. Those doubts are eased by BMW’s head of R&D, Joachim Post, who tells Autocar there is still space for a sleek two-door in the brand’s future. With Audi and Mercedes-Benz retreating from traditional coupes, BMW clearly sees an opportunity.
