US: Harlem Streets Flooded With Joy After Senegal AFCON Triumph
New York, United States - January 18, 2026 Jubilant scenes erupted at the intersection of 116th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue on January 18, 2026, as crowds gathered in rainy dusk conditions to celebrate Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations victory. Footage filmed by X user amadi shows hundreds of people pouring onto wet streets, stopping traffic while dancing, cheering, and climbing onto the roofs of sedans and SUVs. Senegalese flags waved above the crowd as horns blared and voices rang out in unison. Many participants wore green jerseys and clothing reflecting Senegal’s national colors. The filmer moved through the dense throng, revealing headlights glowing against rain-soaked crosswalks and city buildings lining the avenue, with music, shouts, and vuvuzela-like sounds filling the air. The caption accompanying the footage marked the moment with emojis and the phrase “SENEGAL REK,” a Wolof expression meaning “only Senegal.” The celebration unfolded peacefully, with no signs of conflict or intervention, even as traffic was temporarily brought to a halt. The gathering took place in Harlem’s Little Senegal neighborhood shortly after Senegal defeated host nation Morocco 1-0 in the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat. Idrissa Gueye scored the decisive goal in the second half, securing Senegal’s third tournament title. Despite the inclement weather, the streets near the Senegalese Association of America headquarters turned into a spontaneous block party. Similar celebrations were reported across the world, including in Dakar, where President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared January 19 a public holiday. The Harlem footage spread widely online, drawing attention for its display of unity, pride, and shared joy.
