Sudan’s Central Bank in Khartoum became unusable in the attacks, and banknotes were later changed to prevent their use by the RSF.

The Sudan State Radio and Television Corporation is also among the first targets of RSF attacks in April 2023.

State television began broadcasting in 1962, while Sudan’s first radio station aired in 1940, prior to the country’s independence.

According to officials, RSF fighters raided the premises in April 2023 and attempted to read a coup declaration on air, but the broadcast was halted by staff intervention.

The corporation, which sustained extensive damage and now operates from Port Sudan, was later converted into a prison while under RSF control.

Many mosques, luxury hotels, and medical centers have also been reduced to ruins by RSF attacks.

In May 2025, the Sudanese army said that it had cleared Khartoum State of the RSF.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for some northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control. The army, in turn, holds most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and center, including Khartoum.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has since killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
