KAMCHATKA PENINSULA, RUSSIA - JAN. 17, 2026: Heavy snowfall severely disrupted daily life on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, as snowstorms that intensified earlier in the week continued to affect the region on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Roads were closed across several settlements after the peninsula was quickly blanketed in snow, while a state of emergency remains in force in the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky following the deaths of two people linked to the severe weather.

Public transport has been suspended, with personnel from Russia’s National Guard, Rosgvardiya, deployed to assist residents with transportation.

Schools were closed and many institutions and businesses switched to remote work, as rescue teams from the Russian Emergencies Ministry worked to reach residents trapped in snow-covered homes.

Russia’s Fobos Weather Center said snow depth in parts of Kamchatka has reached 1.5 metres and could increase further, describing the snowfall as the heaviest in the region in the past 30 years.
