Drone Captures Tsunami Destruction After Massive Quake Hits Far-East Russia
Severo-Kurils, Russia – A series of four tsunami waves struck the town of Severo-Kurils in the Kuril Islands following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake on July 30, according to Russian sources.
Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov told Interfax that the third wave caused the worst destruction, damaging port infrastructure and vessels in the harbor.
Drone footage posted on Telegram by the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center of Geophysical Surveys of the Russian Academy of Sciences shows widespread flooding and severe damage around the port.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake’s epicenter was located southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, off the Kamchatka Peninsula.
