Moorland, United States - January 21, 2026 Severe winter weather struck Highway D20 west of Moorland on the afternoon of January 21, 2026, creating near-whiteout conditions that made travel extremely hazardous. A short video captured by Iowa State Patrol District 7 Public Resource Officer Trooper Paul Gardner shows wind-driven snow whipping across the rural two-lane highway. Visibility was reduced to a quarter mile or less as gusts lifted loose powder into dense clouds, covering the road and surrounding farmland. Snow actively drifted across the pavement, partially burying the center line and creating swirling mounds along ditches and fences. The overcast sky and gray-white atmosphere added to the disorienting effect, making it difficult to see the horizon. Trooper Gardner’s advisory warned drivers to exercise extreme caution: “Be careful this afternoon as windy conditions will make travel difficult!” The conditions highlight the dangers of winter storms on open Iowa plains, where high winds can rapidly deteriorate visibility and road safety.
