United States - January 19, 2026 January 19, 2026 – Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov reported a breathtaking display of the aurora borealis triggered by a solar flare. While the familiar green glow lit up the sky, a rare red aurora also appeared, usually visible at altitudes of 300–400 km. Kud-Sverchkov described the experience as seeing the aurora from a completely new perspective. “This is what it looks like when you fly right through it!” he said, capturing the moment during his mission. The event highlights the dramatic effects solar activity can have on Earth's upper atmosphere, creating extraordinary light shows visible even from orbit.
