UNCAPTIONED: Bessent Says Trump and Xi Could Meet Multiple Times This Year
Bessent Says Trump and Xi Could Meet Multiple Times This Year. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says relations between Washington and Beijing have entered a more stable phase, reducing the risk of another major economic clash - According to Politico. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bessent said President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping could meet as many as four times this year, helping keep tensions under control. He argued that direct communication between the two leaders allows disagreements to be addressed quickly before they escalate. Bessent said China has followed through on key parts of its trade commitments, including completing its soybean purchases, while adding the U.S. is encouraging further buying as a goodwill gesture. The comments mark a clear shift from the early days of Trump’s presidency, when steep tariffs between the two countries nearly shut down trade. Bessent himself helped broker the deal that eased those tensions. He pointed to several possible meetings this year, including trips to Beijing, Washington, the G20 summit, and potentially China’s APEC gathering, saying regular engagement lowers the chances of renewed conflict.
