Bugatti Nearly Built An Even More Extreme Veyron. The Bugatti Veyron was already one of the most powerful cars ever made, but it almost went even further. During its ten-year run, later versions of the quad-turbo W16 supercar pushed output to 1,183 horsepower — yet engineers believed there was still room for more. Bugatti design boss Frank Heyl told Top Gear that plans were drawn up for a final facelift producing 1,341 horsepower. The proposed MegaWatt Veyron would have rivalled the Koenigsegg One:1 for megawatt-level power. The project was ultimately shelved because then-Volkswagen chief Ferdinand Piëch pushed for an even more ambitious target of nearly 1,500 horsepower and a 279-mile-per-hour top speed — a leap that required major reengineering. Instead, Bugatti waited for the Chiron, which later delivered the performance Piëch had envisioned, rewriting the hypercar record books once again.
