Trump Backed Down On Greenland After UK Pressure, Says Lammy. US President Donald Trump backed down from threats over Greenland after the UK raised firm concerns about the island’s sovereignty, according to Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy. Speaking to the BBC, Lammy said Trump had responded to UK and European pressure by dropping warnings of military force and trade sanctions, bringing the situation back toward negotiation. He said European countries were “where we wanted to be”. Trump abandoned his threat to use force against Greenland on Wednesday, easing tensions with Denmark and other NATO allies. Hours later, he also withdrew plans for 10 percent tariffs on imports from eight countries, including the UK, citing progress toward a future deal. Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not threaten retaliation but told MPs he would not yield on Greenland’s right to self-determination. Downing Street said the shift followed serious behind-the-scenes diplomacy, while Lammy added that Trump remained determined for the US to play a bigger role in Arctic security amid increased Russian activity.
