Greenland insists NATO must defend the island, rules out US control. Greenland’s government has firmly rejected any takeover by the United States, saying the Arctic territory must be defended collectively through NATO. In a statement on Monday, Greenland said all NATO members — including the United States — share responsibility for the island’s security. The coalition government stressed that, as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is already a NATO member and its defence must remain under the alliance. The response comes after President Donald Trump renewed claims that the United States should own Greenland to prevent Russian or Chinese influence. Greenland said it “can in no way accept” a US takeover, underlining its commitment to international law and democratic decision-making. EU Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius warned that any US military takeover of Greenland would effectively spell the end of NATO. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the island governs itself democratically and determines its future independently. While Denmark has ruled Greenland for centuries, the territory has steadily moved toward greater autonomy since 1979, with independence supported across its political spectrum.
