Mexico: Massive Wildfire Engulfs Mexico City As Smoke Plumes Tower Over Neighborhoods
Mexico City, Mexico - January 22, 2026 Xochimilco, Mexico City, Mexico – Video filmed on the morning of January 22, 2026, captures a massive plume of smoke rising from a fire in the La Noria neighborhood of Mexico City. The footage was recorded by X user Alex M., a Química Farmacéutica Bióloga from Mexico City. Thick, dark gray-black smoke surges upward and spreads across the sky from a wooded or vegetated area, creating a hazy, ominous atmosphere in the morning light. While flames are not clearly visible, the dense smoke indicates a significant blaze fueled by vegetation, plastic, or other materials. In the foreground, rooftops, trees, and possible canals typical of Xochimilco appear partially silhouetted against the smoke. Authorities reported the fire occurred at a plastic factory in the Potrero de San Bernardino area, near La Noria station of the Tren Ligero. Firefighters responded with 40 water tank units, supported by Civil Protection, paramedics, and security personnel. Around 50 people were evacuated as the fire spread across an area of roughly 2,000 square meters. Traffic was restricted on Avenida Guadalupe I. Ramírez, Avenida 20 de Noviembre, and surrounding streets, and service at La Noria station was temporarily suspended to ensure public safety. After three hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was brought under control. The Fiscalía General de Justicia will investigate the cause of the fire.
