3. VARIOUS OF EMPTY MARKET SHELVES WASHINGTON, USA - JAN. 23, 2026: Shoppers in Washington flocked to grocery stores on Friday, Jan. 23, as a major snowstorm expected over the weekend stripped many outlets of supplies.

A severe winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and dangerously cold temperatures to large parts of the United States in the coming days, U.S. forecasters said.

The National Weather Service warned that more than half of the country could be affected by intense snowfall, freezing rain and extreme cold, with temperatures in some areas potentially dropping as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius.

Ahead of the storm, authorities urged residents to stay home and prepare for possible power outages, while video footage showed shoppers rushing to supermarkets and emptying shelves in several states.

More than 10 states have declared emergencies, with schools closed and airlines warning of potential flight disruptions as the storm moves east.
