Demonstrations and riots for 8th anniversary of Grigoropoulos murder

Police and army of Athens, Greece are getting ready for confrontation.

A number of demonstrations are going to be carried out in the city center of Athens on Tuesday, for the eighth anniversary of the murder of 15-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas on 6 December 2008.

Fearing a possible escalation of the protests in the city center, the Police will deploy about 3,000 officers to monitor the demonstrations. Additionally the metro stations at Panepistimio and Syntagma will shut down at 15:00 and 16:30.

At noon the Propylaea will host a protest by students, where anarchist blocks are also expected to attend. Anarchist groups have also arranged a protest later on at 17:00. Similar protests will also take place in Thessaloniki, Patra, Volos, Komotini, Agrinio, Trikala and Alexandroupoli, among others.

A week ago there were similar riots. The government ordered the police to stand down and not to engage in fighting with the anarchists. One day after the police union had send a letter to the government complaining that they could not do their job normally with interference of the government
