#16Days
#WeAreAllYazidiWomen
Let’s Stand Together Against
The Slavery of Yazidi Women and Girls by IS
WAVE (Women’s Action against Violent Extremism), a newly emerged women’s organisation based in London, is launching a campaign against the violation of Iraqi Yazidi women and Girls’ rights in Iraq by terrorist group calling themselves Islamic State (IS). With this campaign, WAVE is participating in the Global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, calling individual women and men and civil society organisations and activists in the UK and beyond to stand together against the slavery of Yazidi women and girls in Iraq, as merely one out of many examples of IS brutality against ethnic and religious minorities and women in Iraq and Syria.
With the severe insecure and uncertain situations of millions of women and girls victimised by militarized conflict in different parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East region - Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Palestine, WAVE is allocating its first campaign to advocate against gender-based violence perpetrated by the violent extremist group, IS. WAVE is cooperating with civil society organisations in Iraq and UK such as Middle Eastern Women and Society Organisation (MEWSo) in London, Al-Tahrir Associations For Development in Iraq and a large number of Iraqi human rights and women’s activists (men and women) from different sectarian groups to particularly campaign against the sexual slavery of Yazidi women by IS in Iraq.
Since August 2014, IS has forced 400,000 Yazidis fled their homes and villages and 3,800 Yazidi women and children are still in IS captivity. These Yazidi women and children have been deprived of their basic rights to live in peace and security. In areas controlled by IS in Iraq, most schools were used to detain women and girls until they are sold or forced to marry an IS fighter. Girls as young as 9 years old instead of being safe in schools drawing their future dreams, they were sold or given as gifts to IS fighters and trafficked around the region. Yazidi women were also subjected to forced marriage and rape by different men and they were imprisoned under inhuman detention condition.
Our campaign is a response to the demands of Yazidi women in Iraq and it aims to:
1) Raising public awareness about the brutality of sexual violence Yazidi women experienced by IS, including those who displaced their homes and those who are still abducted by IS;
2) Urging British policy makers, Parliamentarians and British-based human rights and humanitarian organisations to guarantee Yazidi women and girls’ safe return to their homes after the defeat of IS with access to their basic social and economic rights, particularly education, in compliance with the international laws;
3) Appealing the international community to provide urgent support to help Yazidi women survivors cope with the long-lasting physical and psychological trauma of the abuse they have experienced from ISIS;
4) Calling for the immediate release of the thousands of Yazidis still held captive by ISIS and pressurising the Iraqi authorities to hold ISIS members accountable for their crimes against humanity.
According to the international laws, IS crimes against Yazidi women and girls are considered a genocides, and crimes against humanity, war crimes, forced labor crimes, as well as human trafficking crimes. Yazidi women and girls are waiting for the international community to restore their sense of human dignity. The international community, including British government, has to fulfil its moral obligation in compliance with international law and provide Yazidi women support to live in peace and security and have access to education, health services and decent sources of livelihood. Yazidi women are still waiting and hope the response will not take so long.
Yazidi women, like other women’s victims of war and conflict in other parts of the world, deserve our support and solidarity. Please join WAVE campaign to let Yazidi women know they are not alone by joining our Facebook page WAVE - Women's Action against Violent Extremism and sending posts and comments to raise people awareness about the violations against Yazidi women’s human rights.
You are also invited to participate in a protest organised by WAVE in 10TH December 2016, Protest in Solidarity with Yazidi Women with banners sending messages to British politicians and urging them to take concrete actions for Yazidi women.
