Asylum seekers arrive in Canada from USA at St-Bernard de Lacolle border crossing in August 2017 - Details:

For the last few days, a growing number of people have crossed the border between Canada and USA to reach Canada. Most of them are migrants from Haitian decent, fleeing America because of the soon to expire ''protection status'' from which they benefited since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Roughly 200000 people had died during and after the earthquake that is considered to be one of the worst natural disaster in history. The exception that was in place for the ''earthquake refugees'' in the United States had been ongoing since the earthquake but it will expire at the end of this year.

Capacity for about 500 migrants has been revised today and camps will now allow 1200 people to rest while their status is processed. The Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed in the small community of St-Bernard de Lacolle located in the most southern part of the province of Quebec. They have been building tents with hardwood floors and basic lighting immediately north of the border, on the east side of Highway 15, the main corridor to access the metropolitan city of Montreal. The help provided by the troops will benefit the people that are expected to arrive in larger numbers. In the past weeks, the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada has been used and setup with portable beds to accommodate asylum seekers.

Today, members of the CBSA, the military, RCMP and other volunteers such as members of the red cross have been working to organize the influx of migrants. Custom agents walked within tent camps with notepads while other people arrived in buses with suitcases. The Canada Border Services Agency has been overwhelmed with a high number of people crossing the border from the United States into Canada in the past few days. Hundreds of migrants crossed illegally at Roxham Rd among other spots, they will be granted the status of refugee as opposed to the ones attempting to come in at the official border crossing. These people will be returned to the United States and face will face possible deportation.
