Massive sperm whale 'attacks' two snorkelers in Mid-Atlantic

Two lucky snorkelers had this closest of encounters with a huge sperm whale during a trip to Pico Island in the Atlantic Ocean.

This amazing video, which was shot in May 2016, shows the once-in-a-lifetime experience the two snorkelers had when they went out in the ocean to film sperm whales.

Filmer Stefano Ulivi and pal Chris Vyvyan-Robinson spent the whole day off Pico Island - which lies in the mid-Atlantic archipelago of the Azores - to find the right spot to film the big cetaceans when suddenly one makes a beeline for the snorkelers, possibly after being irritated by their presence.

"Towards the end of the day, we spotted this young female close to our boat. Chris decided to dive right in and that probably scared off the whale that probably thought we were attacking her," Stefano Ulivi, the filmer explained.

"Visibility was only three meters and all of a sudden I saw this big animal rushing towards me. The feeling I had of this attack was like being nearly hit by a moving train.

"It was a truly adrenaline-filled experience," he concluded.
