Fishermen and local authorities successfully rescued a sperm whale stranded in shallow water off east China's coast.

At about 8 am local time on April 19, the 20-metre-long sperm whale was found stranded in the Xiangshan sea area of Ningbo city, about 740 metres away from the coastline.

Local fishing authorities and fishermen organised the first rescue to haul the whale away from the area by sending five boats, but the first attempt failed because the whale was too big.

Rescuers were then seen pouring water on the whale to prevent dehydration and waiting for the high tide to come back in.

According to reports, the whale was successfully rescued after a 20-hour operation, making it the first successful sperm whale rescue in Zhejiang.

Ships were used to drag the whale back into the sea as the tide rose.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
